How to prepare Jeevamrut fertilizer at home

At Urban Villager, we believe that healthy soil is the foundation of healthy food. Instead of utilizing synthetic chemical fertilizers, our farm relies on ancient Vedic formulations. The most important of these is Jeevamrut, a liquid organic mixture that acts as a powerful bio-pesticide and soil microbial inoculant.

What is Jeevamrut?

Jeevamrut is a fermented microbial culture that provides nutrients and stimulates the growth of beneficial microorganisms in the soil. It is easy to prepare at home or on the farm using local ingredients.

Required Ingredients (for 200 Litres):

  • Desi Cow Dung: 10 kg (rich in beneficial gut bacteria)
  • Desi Cow Urine: 5 to 10 Litres (contains organic nitrogen and mineral salts)
  • Organic Jaggery (Gur): 2 kg (food source for microbes)
  • Gram Flour (Besan): 2 kg (additional proteins for microbial growth)
  • Virgin Soil: A handful (taken from the farm bunds, which naturally contains native soil microbes)
  • Water: 200 Litres

Preparation Process:

  1. Take a large plastic drum (200-litre capacity) and fill it with water.
  2. Add the cow dung and cow urine. Mix thoroughly with a wooden pole.
  3. Dissolve the jaggery and gram flour in a separate bucket of water and pour the mixture into the drum.
  4. Add the handful of virgin soil. Stir the entire mixture clockwise.
  5. Cover the drum with a gunny bag to keep out direct sunlight while allowing fermentation gases to escape.
  6. Stir the mixture twice a day (morning and evening) for 10 minutes.

After 5 to 7 days, fermentation is complete, and Jeevamrut is ready. We feed this rich culture to our 8 acres land twice a month via irrigation channels, keeping our soil naturally nourished and fertile.
